In honour of Curling Day in Canada this past February, the Rose City Curling Club profiled one of our oldest curling club members and this is his curling story.
Curling has truly been a life long love for one 90-year old curling member at our curling club. Vic Luckwell states he has curled for more than 70 years and has enjoyed many a bonspiel, more notably the Texaco Farmers Provincials in 1986 and 1987 (and he still has the cap to show for it along with some notable curler signatures).
He’s not sure of the year but proudly shares that he has a membership in the 8-ender club! Vic continues to participate in the local senior’s afternoon curling league while wearing his 69 year old curling sweater that was made with his mother’s loving hands and heart for his 21st birthday in 1950. The tam which he won at a bonspiel is at least 60 years old.
Just like the curling attire he has preserved over the years, Vic’s love for the sport of curling will never deteriorate. He continues to live in his own home and never shies away from shovelling snow or cutting grass. He says with a smile, “I gotta keep in shape!” We expect Vic will stay a member of the curling club for awhile yet!
You’re an inspiration Vic! Thanks for sharing your story. Curling truly has no age limit and you are one of many seniors that we are proud to have in our membership and curling community.
